Shirtless Tool Friend RequestIf you’ve ever gotten a fake friend request, you know Facebook has spammers. But it’s winning the fight against them. Facebook’s estimate of the total percentage of monthly users that are “undesirable” or spammer accounts dropped to 0.9 percent from 1.5 percent in June 2012. That means there’s only around 9.5 million of these trouble-makers on the site, down 37 percent from 15.1 million in mid-2012.

Facebook’s Zuckerberg Hints At Bigger, More Media-Rich Ad Formats

mark zuckerbergA lot of the discussion during Facebook’s earnings conference call today revolved around all the stats that the company offered about the fourth quarter performance of various ad units. However, Facebook executives also talked (in a very general way) about their ad plans for 2013, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying that the company will be both improving its ad targeting and launching new formats.

Asked what kinds of formats we can expect, Zuckerberg pointed to what he said is one of the company’s longtime design principles: “We want the organic content to be of the same basic type of format as paid content.” Advertisers, meanwhile, usually want “really rich things like big pictures.”

Facebook’s Revenue Per User In North America Is Now 3-4X Europe and Nearly 6X Asia (But User Growth In Its Cash Cow Is Slowing Down)

fb-earthFacebook’s user base is growing much faster outside of the U.S. than it is in its home market, but it has a little problem: those users are continuing to generate far less revenue than U.S. consumers do for the company. Facebook noted in its Q4 earnings today that average revneues per user (ARPU) for the U.S. in the quarter was $4.08, compared to $1.71 in Europe, $0.69 in Asia and only $0.56 in the rest of the world. That makes for a disproportionate amount coming from the U.S:

Facebook’s Q4 Payments Revenue, Including Gifts, Was Flat At $256M After $66M Revenue Charge

facebook-money-360Facebook has been making some efforts to grow new business areas beyond advertising in areas like Gifts and Facebook Credits in apps, but so far the company has failed to convert that into meaningful growth. The company today reported Q4 revenues of $256 million for payments — which includes services like Facebook Credits and its new Gifts service. While this looks like a 45% increase on Q3, it actually includes 24 months of “historical transactional information” that it’s using to count towards future refunds and chargebacks, worth some $66 million. “Adjusting for the $66 million of revenue in the extra month of December, Payments and other fees revenue would have been essentially flat year-over-year,” it noted.

For The First Time, Facebook’s 680M Mobile DAUs Surpassed Desktop DAUs — Zuck Says It’s Now A “Mobile Company”

4438484758_9e8c5f586d_zToday is Q4 earnings day for Facebook, and we’ve learned some really interesting things about the growth of the social network. Surprisingly to some, mobile DAUs have exceeded those on the web, for the first time in the company’s history. We knew that Facebook was focused on growing its network leveraging mobile devices and platforms, but it’s impressive to see this usage increase in such a way so quickly. To those who have been following Facebook closely, the shift to mobile has been apparent. More and more, people are checking their Facebook messages on their mobile device and skipping the desktop version completely. This is a behavioral shift in users that Facebook is riding along with, and it’s smart. Here’s a quick look at the overall DAUs for Q4: Overall MAUs were at 1.06B, up from 1.01B in Q3. Here’s a look at the data from the the quarter: When the release hit the wires today, it came with a statement from Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg: In 2012, we connected over a billion people and became a mobile company. We enter 2013 with good momentum and will continue to invest to achieve our mission and become a stronger, more valuable company. As far as making money, mobile accounted for 23% of advertising revenue, which is up from 14% of advertising revenue in Q3 of of 2012. Back in September at TechCrunch Disrupt, Zuckerberg projected that one day, Facebook would make more revenue from mobile users. That’s not the case as of yet, but the shift is in full swing. At the time, he said: We’re going to execute this mission to make the world connected and build value over the long-term. The bigger question that will define how we’ve done is how we do with mobile. Facebook stock declined 7% in after-hours trading even though its revenue rose 40% To $1.59B for Q4 2012. Since the release, it’s popping back up a bit. During the earnings call, Zuckerberg discussed the power of mobile: It allows us to reach more people, there is more engagement from those people, and we’ll be able to make more money from those users. Mobile creates a more dynamic ecosystem. He also discussed Facebook’s new approach to build mobile-first applications and features. This is something that everyone has been waiting to hear from Facebook, as the company has been trying some new things, but
