Gnip Now Serves Over 100B Social Activities Per Month, Takes Tumblr Partnership To Next Level

4541560559_a9489e34a1_zGnip is an interesting company. It might not be extremely sexy or one that gets a lot of attention in mainstream press, let alone tech blogs. But it’s one that provides data from social services for a cost. For example, Gnip is a partner with Twitter in sharing its firehose of data for customers who want to know what people are saying about their brand or company.

david-karpDavid Karp, the CEO of New York-based Tumblr, revealed some fresh stats about the micro-blogging platform’s growth today. Tumblr Puts More Focus On Photos With Photoset, Its New Standalone iOS App

7501523994_58a55a7564_zTumblr is a company that has built a platform that seemingly morphs every single time I visit it. One of the most popular features of the service is its ability to share photos, and then of course watch them spread throughout the network quickly.

Today, Tumblr announced a new standalone photo-sharing app called “Photoset”, which allows you to group some pictures together, share them on a web page and spread to your friends on social networks…including Tumblr. Yes, Tumblr is definitely also a social network.

Is Tumblr Quietly Cracking Down On Porn? Two Deleted Sites Say Yes [Update: Tumblr Says No]

not found on tumblrAt 69.4 million blogs and nearly 30 billion posts to date, the rush of growth at blogging site Tumblr has for years had a seedy undercurrent: the popular site is home to a long tail of raunchy, NSFW adult content. But now, a few signs are pointing to the company cracking down on it, with the sudden deletion of several popular porn blogs within a short space of time.

Update: Tumbler says that the removal of some blogs on the site is not a change in its policy on adult content. Rather, it may have been the fault of “an overzealous heuristic”. The full statement: “There have been no recent changes to our content policies. However, we have looked into the accounts in question and discovered that they belong to small handful of blogs that had been recently flagged as ‘spam’ by an overzealous heuristic. We are currently reviewing and will be reactivating any of these accounts that were improperly flagged.”

Better, Stronger, Faster: Tumblr 3.0 For iPhone Has Arrived

tumblr-mainAh, there’s nothing like the sweet smell of highly-anticipated app updates in the morning. As CEO David Karp promised at last week’s F.ounders conference, the new version of Tumblr’s iOS app has now arrived. And it’s a doozy. (I mean that in a very good way). The app is completely redesigned, a lot faster, and offers a ton of new features ranging from Spotify support to gesture-based shortcuts.

The first thing you’ll notice, of course, upon logging in, is a radically different new post screen. While the app had previously featured colorful icons for things like “text,” “photo,” “audio,” and “video,” etc., the new post screen has gone for a black background with richer, bolder icons. It almost gives Tumblr’s iOS app an Android-like feel, to be honest.

Infographic: Small Business Social Cheat Sheet

I love my peeps over at Column Five, but I think they may have tipped a few many watching reruns of Diggnation. Digg? Really? By any stretch of the imagination, Digg‘s grave has been Dugg and StumbleUpon is the one planting flowers. Too soon? Sorry folks… when the audience leaves, the social app dies. It’s social media evolution. But wait… really… we missed LinkedIn, too? Google Business? Are you kidding me? Perhaps it was something a little stronger than beer. … Continue reading
