Liveblogging Facebook’s Marketing Keynote

facebook studio awardFacebook is holding a big event for advertisers today in New York, which it’s calling the fMC (Facebook Marketing Conference). Executives Sheryl Sandberg, Chris Cox, David Fischer, and Mike Hoefflinger are all scheduled to take the stage during the keynote address starting at 1pm Eastern — I’ll be liveblogging it here, while Josh Constine covers the big announcements in separate posts.

To set the stage, here are some relevant stats from eMarketer: Facebook’s share of the US display market increased to 14 percent in 2011, and the search firm predicts that its ad revenue will reach $7.64 in 2014. eMarketer says Facebook passed Yahoo last year to become the biggest display ad seller in the United States — but Google’s growth puts it on-track to pass Facebook in 2013.

Pandora Competitor Senzari Arrives In Spain With New Look, Facebook-Based Recommendations

senz-conf-2Miami-based streaming music startup Senzari, backed by $2 million in angel funding, is continuing its international rollout today with an entrance into its third market since its U.S. launch into private beta last December. Today, the company is announcing that it’s dropping the invite-only status as it moves into Spain, where it has signed a strategic partnership deal with MTV Spain.

The site has also been redesigned with a “mobile first” approach that will help the company transition to smartphone and tablet devices in the near future. As a part of the redesign, an “Around You” feature taps into Facebook to help users discover the music popular with those that frequent a particular location. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of Senzari’s plans for social recommendations. The company is just two months away from the launch of a new algorithm which will help build stations based on data gathered from Facebook’s Open Graph, among other things.

Timeline For PagesFacebook Pages around the world can now upgrade to Timeline, allowing businesses to express themselves more visually through a redesign consistent with what was pushed to user profiles this fall. Major new features include the option to pin posts to the top of the feed for one week, and receive and respond to private messages from users. Google’s Diversifying Display Ad Business Could Pass Facebook’s, eMarketer Guesses

Screen Shot 2012-02-22 at 9.45.05 AMResearch firm eMarketer has put together a few interesting data points that show Google doing better in display ads than you might have realized. That is, by growing this business across properties that it at some point acquired – YouTube, DoubleClick, and mobile (AdMob) – it’s set to pass Facebook’s own display business.

The social network had the highest online ad sales of any company in the US last year, at $1.73 billion. But that was a mere $200 million or so above Google. This year, eMarketer expects a similar story, with Facebook bringing in $2.58 billion versus Google’s $2.54 billion. Things change in 2013 and 2014, further off from what the data can tell us accurately.

Backed By Lerer And SV Angel, Newsle Launches To Let You Track News About Your Friends

newsle-logo-highresIf you want to see what your friends or contacts are up to, you can check out Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram for a realtime feed. But what if you want to read news about your friends? That’s a little bit trickier, which is why Newsle was born. Axel Hansen and Jonah Varon created the site in early 2011 as a way to find out more about what their friends and people they met at school were up to during the summer, and beyond. At the time, Hansen and Varon were sophomores at Harvard, but they’ve since taken leave and have moved to San Francisco to focus on Newsle full-time. (Sounds like a familiar story, doesn’t it?)
