Facebook + Kayak: Flights With Friends Launches To Take The Pain Out Of Group Travel Planning

Screen shot 2013-01-10 at 3.05.50 AMOver the last few years, the travel industry has begun to undergo significant change, as startups and incumbents have fought to bring the disparate parts of a highly regulated industry online. Much of the attention from consumer web businesses has focused on making travel more “social,” improving discovery and helping travelers figure out what to do at destinations of choice. Today, there’s a laundry list of options when it comes to finding information about travel destinations, and sites like TripIt and Kayak (now part of Priceline) have changed the way we search for and book travel — for business and pleasure.

However, while the travel space (especially the social side) begins its inevitable consolidation after a flood of activity and launches, as Semil pointed out, there’s still plenty of opportunity “closer to the top of the decision funnel” — the moments after we decide where it is we want to go. Flights With Friends, a San Francisco-based startup that launches out of beta today, is willing to bet there’s a big opportunity at the top of the funnel in one of social travel’s less-explored segments: Group travel planning.

healthtech1The holidays wreak havoc on our bodies, with their mandatory over-indulgence in food as well as family and reminiscences. As we reflect on the year past — its victories and losses — we also begin looking ahead to the next, and in big ways or small, making plans to keep our momentum going.

For many, this involves taking health more seriously, whether it’s losing a few pounds, training for that first marathon, or just being more active. In turn, there’s been a lot of activity in the health space over the last year, as we’ve seen a number of apps and startups launch — or continue iterating — in the quest to help us make healthier choices, get in shape and conquer the world.

TumblPad: Tumblr Finally Releases Its Native iPad App, Sporting Enhanced Navigation & Markdown Support

Screen shot 2012-12-19 at 7.10.40 PMNow that Tumblr’s blackouts are behind it, the company is back to focusing on its product, particularly its mobile one. Days after adding support for Android tablets, the company has announced that it updated its iOS app, adding compatibility for both the iPad and iPad mini.

Tumblr’s mobile channel is growing and, by the way, has recently helped to propel the blogging platform to more than 20 billion monthly pageviews. The company last updated its iOS app in November to improve user experience, speed, and engagement on the iPhone by making the app “native” — i.e. integrating it more deeply into the iOS experience.

Social Voting App Polar Has Had Over A Half Million Votes In Its First Eleven Days

480629716_f8a62cbc77_zHot-or-not is a site that most of us who have used the web are familiar with. Sit down at your desk, look at pictures and profiles of a bunch of people, and respond to them with an easy voting interaction. That type of service has been popular over the years, but with the surge of mobile coming fast and furious the past few years, there are opportunities to take it to the next level.

Today, I spoke with one of the Co-Founders of a company called Input factory, Inc., that’s behind a new social voting app for iOS called Polar. That Co-Founder, Luke Wroblewski, is a self-described “data nerd.” When it comes to surveys and polls, it’s all about the numbers, but for the users, Polar is all about entertainment, he says. And collecting data that his team can use to make great connections for its users.

Chrome OS: Google’s Most Underrated Project That You’ve Already Been Testing And Just Didn’t Know It

photo 1There are hundreds of devices to choose from when you’re considering a new desktop computer, laptop or mobile device. We’re overwhelmed by all of the choices we have, but choice is good. When it comes to computing, as far as operating systems, there are three huge players: Microsoft, Apple and Google. Yes, Google.

A curious thing happened during Chrome browser’s rise to being the most-used browser – an operating system was born. Perhaps that was the plan all along. One can never truly know with Google. What I do know is that when you’re on the go, especially with a laptop, the primary piece of software that everyone uses is the web browser, so why not build an operating system on top of it?

Google Play Gets Real: Reviews Will Now Be Posted With Your Google+ Name And Picture

4639229188_23708ba388_zWhen you visit a review on Google Play for an app, book, song or movie, you won’t have to worry as much about whether someone is sheepishly hiding behind a computer firing off nasty words, as Google has now flipped on the switch to display your Google+ name and profile picture with all reviews you add to the store.

I’m not so sure this is the best thing in the world, 100%, as you don’t have an option to turn it off. I like the idea of inviting people to share their thoughts, and mixing in real names and pictures if chosen by the user. That way, people know what reviews they might want to trust over other ones that are anonymous and thus, perhaps shady. The company seems to be choosing quality over quantity, though.
