Facebook has won a court challenge against its real names policy in Germany. Yesterday an administrative court in the North of Germany granted Facebook’s request for “suspensive effect” against a ruling made by Schleswig-Holstein’s Data Protection Commissioner that Facebook was violating German and European law.
Facebook’s newest feature Graph Search — a tool which lets users datamine their friends’ and strangers’ photos and interests — merely adds to the site’s stalkerish reputation. Sharing anything on Facebook now carries an even bigger risk of over-sharing, and should make users think long and hard about every little thing they contribute to its data banks.
The European activists behind the Europe v Facebook campaign group, which accuse the social network of violating Europe’s Data Protection Laws, have stepped up their long running battle against it. The group has indicated it is preparing to sue Facebook in Ireland — and has set up a crowdfunding platform to raise money to fund possible legal action.
