Bang With Friends Meme Makes An Appearance At SXXXSW

bwswsxThe one night stand is proof that human beings, despite our fancy computational glasses and smart fridges and our affinity for “higher learning,” are still animals. And where else to live like an animal but the Wild Wild West of Austin, TX, host to yet another very sexy SXSW conference?

Luckily for SXSW attendees, Bang With Friends is bringing a new product to SXSW, called (you guessed it) Bang With SXSW. A quick trip to www.sxsw.bangwithfriends.com lands you back at BWF, and after connecting you’ll see available SXSWers who’ve registered with the service, along with your usual Facebook friends.

PopTip Brings Its Instant Twitter Polling And Revamped Dashboard To Brands On Facebook

poptip-logo128x128After launching out of TechStars NY back in June, PopTip has been building out a Facebook version of its instant polling product.

PopTip originally launched for Twitter, letting brands ask questions in natural language and then tracking all the responses (misspellings and all) to give back to the brand.
PopTip promised a Facebook counterpart to the product down the line, and has today delivered upon that promise.

Snoox, The Pinterest Of Recommendations, Launches On iOS And Android

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 9.35.40 AMWhen Snoox, the web-based recommendation engine for friends, first launched in November, my only gripe was that searching for recommendations is best suited for mobile, even though giving recommendations feels right on the web. Luckily, my prayers have been answered as Snoox has developed apps for both iOS and Android, just as promised. The company recently raised $2 million in funding to develop the apps, which have been in the pipeline since launch. In case you are unfamiliar with the platform, Snoox is a lot like Pinterest, but with recommendations. In fact, I like to call it the Pinterest with a purpose, since the art of creating boards isn’t just for later aspirational perusing, but rather to let your friends know what you think is great. Simply log in the platform and start typing in your favorite things. Snoox searches for images on the web, or you can add your own, and from there all you need is to add a link. Snoox automatically tries to add in a “Click To Buy” link from Amazon, Best Buy and GrubHub. The mobile applications offer the same experience as the web, letting users post recommendations or browse through them. Obviously, creating boards full of beautiful imagery and links is best suited to web, but the time I need a recommendation most is when I’m out, on the go, and am looking for something fun to do. The Snoox team is well aware that mobile is critical to their success. Founder Guy Poreh mentioned that a great deal of their traffic is already coming from mobile. However, “we wanted to make sure we had an infrastructure that could support structured data search,” said Poreh. “It’s much easier to build out that backend on the web first.” See, Snoox wants to nail the beautiful, aesthetically pleasing nature of Pinterest on the creation end. But on the search side, Snoox wants you to be able to search the word “hotels” and find recommendations straight from your Facebook friends, as opposed to 10,000 pages of Pinterest madness from what could be total strangers. Most companies launch on one platform before the other, but Poreh tells me that the competitive landscape is heating up, and that if they’re going to launch, they need to launch big. As you may already know, Stamped (another recommendation platform) was bought up by Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo, and Thumb (yet another recommendation

Yammer Taps Microsoft Translator To Bring Cross-Language Translation To The Enterprise Social Network

YammerMessageTransla_PageMicrosoft-owned Yammer has been relatively quiet since its acquisition by Redmond, but the company piped up today to announce plans to add instant message translation capabilities, which will allow multilingual collaboration on the “Facebook for the office.” The Yammer team is tapping Microsoft Translator to power the translations, which is yet another benefit of Microsoft’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Yammer. It’s relatively simple, and much like current auto-translation services you’d find on Google Translate (built into Chrome) or Airbnb, which has auto-translation for over 20 languages. Essentially, any time someone yams in a language that is not your default language, a “Translate” button will appear below the post. Once you hit translate, the entire thread will be translated into your preferred, default language. This means that the initial post (whether it was a reply or a thread-starter) will be translated, along with any response messages that are added to that thread (past, present, and future). Here’s what Adam Pisoni, Yammer co-founder and GM of Engineering had to say: Removing language as a barrier to cross-company collaboration can be a competitive game changer for multinational organizations. It opens a world of possibilities. This is another example of Yammer’s accelerated innovation following the Microsoft acquisition — we’re able to use Microsoft Translator to quickly deliver additional value to customers. Microsoft Translator supports 39 different languages. The company also claims that 65 percent of Yammer’s 7 million users do not live within the United States. Though the service has long supported various languages, this will allow for cross-language collaboration for Yammer’s clients. Here’s a video of the translation in action:

Stanford Grad Files Lawsuit Claiming He Came Up With Snapchat, Snapchat Calls Lawsuit “Devoid Of Merit”

murphybrownspiegelIn what appears to be a cyclical recurrence of post-success litigation, Snapchat is being sued by a man from South Carolina named Frank Reginald Brown IV, who claims that he originally came up with the idea for the ephemeral picture messaging app.

The idea for Snapchat is simple, yet has been widely misunderstood by older generations: you take a picture or video of yourself (or something else if you choose), set a time limit, and send the picture off to a friend. The app will only let the user view the picture for the pre-set period of time, no more than ten seconds.

A Disrupt Battlefield Launch And Three Redesigns Later, Postwire Tells All

Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 9.46.41 AMPostwire, the startup aiming to disrupt content sharing on a business level, launched out of Disrupt last year in May, and has since undergone nearly three redesigns. This may appear, to the surface observer, as a lack of focus or certainty, yet as Postwire grows its user base in various verticals, rapid iteration allows them to put important tools and tricks in the forefront, while pushing any confusing queues to the background.

On one side, marketers are organizing content in Postwire to share with salespeople who can then carry it on to their prospects. Because of this, one Postwire user can rally their entire network, from creative marketers all the way to sales, to get on the Postwire wagon. This has accounted for major growth at Postwire.

Ten Days After Private Beta Launch, Snapchat Officially Brings Video To Android

snapandroidIt was just ten days ago that Snapchat launched a private beta version of its Android app, updated to include the video capture feature we’ve come to enjoy on iOS.

Today, however, the company has turned it around, making the Snapchat with video application officially available in theGoogle Play</a. Store. Co-founder Evan Spiegel mentioned to us earlier in the month that developing Snapchat for Android can be difficult, since Snapchat's video feature needs to be compatible across a number of different processors, screen sizes, etc.
