Weathermob – New Social Network Based on Weather

Weathermob app for iPhone

If you’ve ever had to make small talk, chances are the weather has come up at some point. Based on this idea, that the topic of weather is a way to open communication lines, Weathermob decided to create a social network that fuses social interaction with local weather forecasts.

According to a Weathermob press release, the free app, available for iPhone, “mashes up real-time meteorological data, location-based services, photo sharing and user sentiment to create an app that enables users to report on the weather right now in their local area and share it with their friends while expressing how it’s making them feel.”

The press release went on to quote CEO of Weathermob, Julia LeStage as saying: “We discovered that users were reporting the storm in really creative and personal ways, often just as much about the way it was affecting them as the weather itself. We saw just as many pictures and videos of cozy log fires, hot chocolate and red wine as we did reports of snow and ice. It was far more fun — and much more meaningful — than only watching someone in a TV studio and suit, talk at me about cold fronts.”

Looks like some people are already using the new social networking app as people are posting their Weathermob reports and photos on Twitter. Here is what a few Twitter users said:

It’s snowing! Can’t believe it! Neither can those around me! Recruiting reporters! weathermob.me/report/aM30XH

Really liking Weathermob http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/weathermob/id463729367?mt=8 It’s like instagram and twitter for weather, and the kind of thing I could get addicted to.

Cold, cloudy, windy (looks like it’ll be even windier later) and patches of rain. Is it summer yet? weathermob.me/report/9b59Bz

So what’s your forecast on Weathermob’s success as a social network: cloudy or sunny?
