Mall of America’s QR Codes Reveal Big Prizes

In an effort to increase consumer knowledge about QR codes and drive traffic to its stores, Mall of America ran a promotion called “Snap and Win”on Black Friday. The promotion allowed the first 300 people to select a QR code from a pool of 100 to scan with their mobile phone. Once scanned, the QR code revealed a prize, which was anywhere from $25 to a $1,000 shopping spree.

The executive vice president of business development at Mall of America said of their promotion: “Snap+Win is an event that combines the excitement of a giveaway with emerging technology. QR codes are gaining momentum with the general public, but many still don’t understand the purpose or useability of them. Snap+Win is a fun event that is allowing us to teach the consumer more about QR codes.”

Looks like Mall of America anticipated great success with their QR code campaign because they didn’t end it on Black Friday. “Mall of America is also offering guests the chance to snap a QR code to win a $1,000 shopping spree from Black Friday through Dec. 23. Holiday Snap+Win codes will be placed on food court tables, digital signage and on the back of guest service staff t-shirts. Guests will use their smartphone to snap the tag and enter through an electronic entry form. The winner will be drawn and notified on Christmas Eve,” a press release for the mall noted.

With estimated sales around $11.4 billion, it sounds like many of you took advantage of all the savings offered on Black Friday and many businesses received a big boost in sales.
